openRxiv seeking its inaugural CEO

In the evolving landscape of scientific communication, openRxiv stands at a pivotal juncture. As the newly established nonprofit overseeing bioRxiv and medRxiv—the world’s leading preprint servers for life sciences—we’re seeking our first Chief Executive Officer to guide our mission of advancing open science and transforming how scientific discoveries are shared globally.

A unique leadership opportunity

This inaugural CEO role represents a rare chance to shape the future of scholarly communication while leading a mission-driven organization at the intersection of science, technology, and nonprofit management. The ideal candidate will be both visionary and practical, bringing experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and strategic partnership development.

The role and responsibilities

Our CEO will collaborate closely with the Board to establish openRxiv’s strategic direction and ensure its long-term sustainability. Working alongside our Chief Scientific and Strategy Officer and to-be-hired Chief Product Officer, the CEO will:

• Drive organizational development and operational excellence
• Lead fundraising initiatives and diversify revenue streams
• Serve as the primary ambassador to funders, partners, and the scientific community
• Ensure alignment between business operations and scientific/technological goals
• Build high-performance teams in a startup environment

While our scientific leadership will define content policies and publishing strategies, the CEO will create the organizational foundation that enables these initiatives to thrive.
